I have had the remarkable good fortune to have had a series of jobs that I loved.  While I've had a variety of jobs, they have all been with the IBM Corporation.  I began working for IBM full time at the end of my junior year in college.  IBM and I have been good for each other and that permitted me to retire at a relatively young age.  In turn this has given me the time to engage in a wide variety of volunteer activities.  The information below recaps my professional career.  Articles that I have published are listed on the Experience page.

  • Operator and Datacenter supervisor
    • My initial IBM positions, while still in college,  provided a strong foundation in computer technology and gave me the opportunity to explore and experiment with an amazing variety of leading edge technology.  Incredibly, it also gave me early exposure to DARPAnet, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency project that eventually became the bedrock of the internet.

  • Scientific marketing and support
    • Responsible for providing marketing and technical support and training for the entire midwestern part of the country.  I learned to speak in public and to develop skills as an instructor.
    • Areas of expertise included project scheduling, school bus scheduling, student scheduling, wholesale and retail product forecasting/scheduling and  vehicle scheduling.

  • Database and query language consultant
    • Similar responsibilities to those above, but for database management software and technology that let people use computers using with simple English phrases.

  • Marketing and technical support to the insurance industry
    • This was the beginning of my recurring involvement with the insurance industry.
    • Clients included all of the major insurers in the Chicago area

  • .Product Manager
    • Having won numerous awards, including the exclusive IBM Golden Circle, I was transferred to a divisional headquarters location in White Plains, NY and our family moved to Connecticut.
    • This position allowed me to pursue my interest in simplifying the interfaces between people and computers.
    • It is here that I developed expertise in negotiating  with multiple groups and countries and balancing conflicting needs, and in forecasting revenue and expenses (sounds like a City Council position, doesn't it).

  • Development manager / Project manager
    • The desire to get to Texas led to this position which involved the direct development and business management for a number of software products

  • .Strategic Planning Manager
    • Developing the long term strategy and forecasts for a $50M/year revenue stream

  • Plans, Controls and Security Manager
    • "Owned" all of the equipment for an IBM division across the country.
    • This position also included responsibility for disaster recovery planning for a very large national datacenter, and also for security of the systems.
    • Equal Opportunity reporting and tracking was another responsibility of this position and provided me with new insights in that area.

  • Market Development
    • Worked with two of the largest IBM customers in the country to develop new relationships and explore new technologies.
    • It was through this activity that I became involved with a variety of publishing products and techniques, and the precursor technologies that led to the internet's worldwide web.

  • Management Consultant
    • IBM entered the management consulting business, assisting clients in developing and implementing business strategies.  This also evolved into assisting clients to successfully implement large scale mergers and acquisitions.
    • My focus was primarily in the insurance industry and my clients include many of the largest insurance companies in the country.
